Leading in Crisis: How to Stay Calm When Everything Feels On Fire

I have led our team through a recession, a pandemic, an algorithm collapse that wiped out a chunk of our pipeline overnight, and more than a few personal seasons I would not wish on anyone. Here is what I have learned about leading well when things are hard.

Be the thermostat, not the thermometer. Your team is reading you. If you walk in panicked, the temperature in the whole company rises. Decide ahead of time what version of you shows up under stress — and then show up that way on purpose.

Over-communicate the plan, even when the plan is changing. Silence in a crisis gets filled with the worst possible story. Weekly all-hands. Short. Honest. "Here is what we know, here is what we do not know yet, here is what we are doing about it." Repeat.

Protect the mission. In hard seasons, the temptation is to chase any dollar that walks through the door. Do not. The companies that come out of crises strongest are the ones who said no to the wrong-fit work and yes to doubling down on what they are best at.

And one last thing — go home on time. Your family is watching too. The leader who burns out trying to save the company usually loses both.
