3 Tips to Protect Your Business from Life's Curveballs

3 Tips to Protect Your Business from Life's Curveballs

Every entrepreneur eventually gets the call. A key employee leaves. A big client cancels. A health scare. A family emergency. The question is never if life will throw you a curveball — it is whether your business is built to survive one.

Three things I wish I had done sooner:

1. Build a six-month cash cushion. Not three months. Six. The difference between sleeping at night and lying awake at 3am is usually about 90 days of runway. Boring advice. Life-changing advice.

2. Document the things only you know. Every founder has 30+ critical processes living in their head. Spend one Friday per month writing one of them down. In a year you have a real operations manual and a business that does not collapse if you take a week off.

3. Build a number two. The single best decision I ever made was hiring someone capable of running the agency without me in the room. It freed me up, it improved every meeting, and it meant the business kept moving when I needed to be present at home.

Resilience is not built in the storm. It is built in the calm. Use this season — whatever it looks like — to put one of these three things in place.
